Pride Month and Mental Health: Choosing to Be Yourself

June is Pride Month — a time to celebrate love, identity, acceptance, and being proud of who you are. It is also a time to talk honestly about mental health within the LGBTQ+ community.

At Be The One Counseling and Services, we understand that being yourself is not always easy. Many people in the LGBTQ+ community have faced judgment, rejection, bullying, discrimination, or pressure to hide who they are. These experiences can affect mental health in serious ways.
That is why Pride Month is not only about celebration.
It is also about healing, support, self-love, and emotional wellness.

Be the One Who Chooses Yourself

Many LGBTQ+ individuals spend years trying to make other people comfortable while ignoring their own feelings and needs.

You deserve to:
● Feel safe being yourself
● Be accepted and respected
● Love who you are without shame
● Set healthy boundaries
● Take care of your mental health

You do not have to change who you are to deserve love, peace, or happiness.

Mental Health Matters
Mental health struggles can happen to anyone, but many LGBTQ+ individuals face extra stress because of how they are treated by others.

Some common struggles may include:
● Anxiety
● Depression
● Feeling alone
● Fear of rejection
● Low self-esteem
● Stress from hiding your identity
● Family or relationship problems
● Trauma from bullying or discrimination

These feelings are real, and they matter.

Taking care of your mental health may look like:
● Talking to a therapist
● Spending time with supportive people
● Resting when you feel overwhelmed
● Taking breaks from social media
● Saying “no” to toxic environments
● Practicing self-care
● Asking for help when needed

Getting support is a sign of strength — not weakness.

To Allies and Supporters

If you are someone who supports the LGBTQ+ community, your kindness and support can make a huge difference.

Support can look like:
● Listening without judging
● Respecting names and pronouns
● Standing up against bullying or hateful comments
● Creating safe spaces
● Checking in on loved ones
● Learning and growing

You do not have to be perfect to be supportive. Compassion, respect, and understanding go a long way.

Keep Going

To anyone in the LGBTQ+ community who is struggling right now:
You are important.
You are worthy.
You deserve support, peace, and happiness.
You deserve to be loved as your true self.

Even on hard days, keep going.
There is nothing wrong with needing support while healing and growing.

This Pride Month…

Celebrate yourself.
Protect your peace.
Support others.
Take care of your mental health.
And most importantly — be proud of who you are.

At Be The One Counseling and Services, we believe everyone deserves a safe, welcoming, and supportive place to care for their mental health.
